Position Overview

Reporting to a Manager within Reinsurance Accounting, the Summer Student will support the North American Reinsurance Accounting Operations team with basic accounting, reporting, reconciliation, and process documentation activities.

This role is intended as a learning opportunity for a student pursuing studies in accounting, finance, business, commerce, or a related field. The student will work under the guidance of experienced team members and will be assigned tasks with limited scope and appropriate supervision.

The role provides exposure to reinsurance accounting processes, quarterly close support, client data review, reporting support, and process improvement activities, with a focus on accuracy, organization, and timely completion.

Your Role:

Reinsurance accounting support:

  • Assist with the review and organization of client data and accounting support files.
  • Support basic reconciliations and follow up on simple variances under supervision.
  • Help prepare working papers used in the quarterly close process.
  • Support the tracking of outstanding items, open queries, and follow-up actions.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate records for premiums, commissions, claims, or other reinsurance-related balances.
  • Escalate questions, unusual items, or potential issues to the appropriate team member for review.
  • Help the team with Excel-based templates and trackers.

Reporting and analysis support:

  • Assist with preparing routine reports and supporting schedules for internal review.
  • Help compile data for premium estimates, outstanding claims estimates, and other client-related balances.
  • Support basic analysis by comparing data, identifying simple trends, and flagging items that require further review.
  • Assist with ad hoc reporting requests from the team, as needed.
  • Help organize documentation used for management reporting and internal discussions.

Process documentation and administrative support:

  • Assist with updating process documentation, checklists, and desktop procedures.
  • Help document recurring tasks, key deadlines, and handoff points within accounting processes.
  • Support the organization of shared folders, templates, and reference materials.
  • Participate in process walkthroughs to learn how accounting activities are completed.
  • Support small process improvement activities, where appropriate

Your Profile:  

  • Currently enrolled in a university or college program in Accounting, Finance, Business, Commerce, or a related field.
  • Interest in accounting, financial reporting, insurance, or reinsurance operations.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Exposure to Excel formulas, pivot tables, or data analysis.
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage assigned tasks and deadlines.
  • Good communication skills and ability to ask questions when clarification is needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Previous co-op, internship, or part-time experience in accounting, finance, insurance, or an office environment.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, Oracle Fusion, SQL, or other reporting tools would be considered an asset, but is not required.

Our hourly rate for this role is between $20-23/ hr. The range displayed is typical for candidates hired in this position. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, experience and comparison to internal equity.

This role is located in our Toronto office on 390 Bay St, and we operate in a hybrid work model. This job posting is for a new temporary vacancy.
