Primary Objectives
HSB Canada’s Head Office Engineering Department (HOED) is our center of competence for technical consultancy and risk assessment of highly exposed risks across North America. Our multi-disciplined team of experienced engineers assess operational risks, equipment breakdown, and inherent hazards across a multitude of industrial processes. Our expertise supports our Underwriters, Claims Adjusters, Brokers, and Insureds in quantitatively assessing risk and recommending meaningful loss control practices. We are looking for a motivated and self-directed Mechanical Engineer with a passion for learning to join our team as an Account Engineer specializing in Equipment Breakdown.
Although prior insurance experience is preferred, we also welcome professionals from heavy industry to consider a transition to the Insurance Engineering space. If you are a seasoned professional, such as a field engineer, manufacturing engineer, maintenance engineer, commissioning engineer (or similar/mix), with a natural curiosity and a desire to apply your expertise to contribute meaningfully, then this position could be an excellent fit for you.
As an Account Engineer, you will foster long-term partnerships with our key accounts by performing routine risk engineering activities. This includes understanding their businesses, performing on-site risk evaluations, determining risk rankings, quantifying potential loss events, and preparing engineering assessments and reports. You will also provide technical consultation to the business, support claims by objectively assessing loss events, and keep our technical body of knowledge and engineering intellectual capital up to date.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a deep technical understanding of our insured’s businesses to enable world-class insurance engineering services.
- Perform engineering evaluations of complex risks to identify and understand their equipment, processes, and operations.
- Evaluate and assess the nature, probability, and magnitude of failure modes and potential loss events.
- Lead and/or participate in on-site risk evaluations and field surveys, including interviewing key site personnel.
- Obtain and evaluate technical data and reports to identify hazards and deficiencies with the aim of providing risk improvement solutions and reducing risk exposures.
- Work collaboratively with Underwriters and Claims Adjusters to provide engineering opinions, necessary calculations, and estimates.
- Contribute to the growth, improvement, and instruction of our intellectual capital through the development of technical articles, educational tutorials, and technical bulletins.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Expertise in rotating equipment, specifically prime movers for power generation, is highly desirable.
- 10+ years of experience in heavy industry as a field engineer, manufacturing engineer, maintenance engineer, commissioning engineer (or similar/mix).
- Experience in at least one of the following industries: power, mining, chemical, nuclear, oil & gas, or manufacturing.
- Good fundamental knowledge of engineering and plant operating principles.
- Previous Engineering experience in the Insurance Industry is considered an asset but not required.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and quantify potential risks.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Excellent oral, presentation and written communication skills are a must.
- Proficient in report writing, use of MS Office applications.
- This role will require travel to conduct site visits as deemed necessary by Underwriting and Claims departments.
- Above all else, a bold and spirited approach to interpreting and understanding unfamiliar complex industry processes with the aim of identifying critical equipment, operating and maintenance principles, and common failure modes.

Our base salary range for this role is between $98,010 and $114,345 per year, plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. The salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to internal equity.
This role is located in our Toronto office on 390 Bay St, and we operate in a hybrid work model. This job posting is for an existing vacancy.
