Munich Re Green Tech Solutions has long been a pioneer in performance warranty insurance for renewable energy technologies. The Emerging Green Technologies team provides bespoke risk transfer solutions for e mobility, hydrogen, and other sustainable technologies, including geothermal energy.

In the field of geothermal energy, exploration risk represents a key challenge to the successful financing of projects in Germany and other regions. Our work focuses on addressing these risks through innovative insurance solutions that support project development and bankability.

Emerging Green Tech Solutions is part of the New & Green Tech / Internet of Things (IoT) department, operating in an international setup with colleagues based in Munich, India, China, and across the United States. 
We are growing our team and are looking for a geothermal energy expert to join our highly successful team.

Your Job

  • Evaluate deep geothermal projects with a focus on resource and discovery risk (Fündigkeitsrisiko) and overall subsurface uncertainty  
  • Analyze and interpret geological and geophysical data, including probability of success (POS) assessments, seismic datasets, well data, and reservoir studies  
  • Review and summarize technical documentation, geological models, and drilling programs provided by project developers  
  • Participate in technical discussions with clients on reservoir modelling, drilling concepts, and subsurface risk mitigation strategies  
  • Collaborate with internal experts across underwriting, risk management, and engineering to support risk evaluation and project structuring  
  • Contribute to and familiarize yourself with internal processes related to geothermal risk assessment and underwriting workflows  
  • Support coordination and interface activities with KfW and other relevant institutions or stakeholders  
  • Prepare technical summaries, risk assessments, and internal documentation for decision-making processes  
  • Communicate with international internal and external stakeholders, often in English  
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of methodologies and tools used in geothermal risk assessment 

Your Profile

  • Degree in geology, geosciences, natural sciences, or engineering (e.g. petroleum, reservoir, or geothermal engineering)  
  • Relevant professional experience in deep geothermal energy, for example as an exploration or development geologist, drilling engineer, or reservoir engineer / modeller  
  • Strong understanding of subsurface exploration, drilling operations, and reservoir characterization  
  • Ability to interpret geophysical data and probabilistic resource assessments  
  • Fluency in English and German required, with additional languages considered a plus 
  • Experience in insurance, risk assessment, project finance, or a completed PhD; underwriting experience, particularly with long term technology risks and/or complex insurance structures is of advantage 
  • Ability to work effectively in an international, interdisciplinary team environment  
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex technical information into clear and concise conclusions  
  • High level of initiative and motivation to contribute to a growing and innovative field within renewable energy  
  • Strong communication skills with an articulate and confident presence
  • Team-oriented and comfortable working in a global environment, with strong marketing affinity, advanced visualization skills and the ability to lead consultative client discussions; structured and entrepreneurial working style as well as a passion for developing and advancing innovative insurance solutions. 
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and promote new ideas and approaches to meet client needs
