The Opportunity

Future focused and always one step ahead!

This role collaborates with the Liability Practice Lead overseeing the strategic handling and litigation of liability claims issues. The Liability Lead will be responsible for the strategic handling of claims in all lines of business from pre-litigation assistance through strategy at trial and appeal. They will be a litigation subject matter expert adding value when assigning defense counsel, strategic evaluation of claims, and litigation management. The Liability Lead will work closely with litigation support preferred vendors and defense panel counsel. They will work closely with Coverage Leads in collaborating ad formulating claim strategy when necessary, as well as other business units within the organization.

The Company is open to considering candidates in Princeton, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; New York City, NY; and Chicago, IL.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies claims requiring early action in terms of strategic claim handling and litigation management.

  • Leads Roundtables of claims in accordance with escalation processes and procedures.

  • Collaborates with coverage counsel in analyzing policy considerations when assigning defense counsel and addressing policy demands and potential extra-contractual and bad faith issues.

  • Reviews policy demands to ensure timely and proper responses.

  • Addresses legal billing questions with defense counsel panel firms and assists in finding solutions.

  • Monitors defense counsel panel firms for compliance with Litigation Guidelines.

  • Contributes to the audit process for defense counsel panel firms for compliance with Litigation Guidelines, best practices, industry standards, and overall results.

  • Responsible for review of panel counsel applications for recommendations for inclusion on current panels.

  • Assists in coordinating panel counsel firms in participating in monthly CE/CLE training.

  • Monitors Preferred Vendors per the Litigation Guidelines.

  • Selections of Preferred Vendors and overall expense management.

  • Engages with other Litigation Management and expense management functions.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree required.

  • 10-15 years of experience as insurance defense litigation attorney, with jury trial experience preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in a claims management role implementing strategic claim handling and litigation management on high exposure complex claims.

  • Experience in handling multiple lines of business whether; Legal Malpractice, Healthcare, Miscellaneous Professional Liability, Cyber, General Liability, Public Entity, Religious Institutions, Property, etc.

  • Insurance coverage experience preferred, but not required.

  • Experience with legal bill review and audit process for legal billing.

  • Experience working with litigation management vendors; whether court reporters, record retrieval services, or litigation consulting services.

  • Ability to think creatively and develop better solutions for existing processes.

  • Ability to build and sustain internal and external business relationships.

  • Skilled with Microsoft Office including Access, Excel, and Word.

  • Detail oriented, particularly with respect to data quality.

  • Proven ability to contribute to critical projects and initiatives.

  • Self-motivated and effective at time management and prioritization.

The Company is open to considering candidates in numerous locations, including NYC and Chicago. The salary range posted below reflects market variations across various locations.  This role is designated for either Chicago or NYC and reflects multiple geographies.  The offer will be adjusted per geography.

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $174,200 - $290,300 plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay.  In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).
