Chief Underwriter Germany & Austria (m/f/d)*

About the role

We are looking for a recognized underwriting leader who will shape the future of underwriting in Germany and Austria while serving as Munich Re's leading underwriting voice in these markets. 

In this highly visible and strategically important role, you will represent Munich Re as a trusted advisor to clients and senior stakeholders across the German and Austrian insurance markets. You will combine profound medical underwriting expertise with strategic thinking, market insight and a passion for innovation to shape underwriting practices, drive digital transformation and create measurable value for our clients and Munich Re. 

As a senior member of our underwriting community, you will play a key role in realizing our ambition of being a proactive, market-shaping and high performing underwriting team, taking ownership for client outcomes, business opportunities and the future development of medical underwriting. 

Your Job

• Serve as Munich Re's Chief Underwriter for Germany & Austria and act as the leading underwriting voice in these strategically important markets. 
• Build trusted relationships with senior decision-makers at key clients and represent Munich Re at industry forums, conferences and market initiatives. 
• Independently decide on complex underwriting and risk management matters and provide expert guidance on highly complex cases and underwriting questions. 
• Define and decide on market-specific underwriting philosophies, medical and non-medical underwriting guidelines, and best-practice standards. 
• Shape underwriting strategies, identify emerging market opportunities and proactively drive innovation in products, services, processes and digital underwriting solutions. 
• Advise clients and internal stakeholders on complex underwriting, risk management and underwriting transformation topics. 
• Own strategic initiatives and cross-functional projects that create measurable value for clients and Munich Re. 
• Develop and inspire underwriters and consultants, fostering a culture of accountability, ownership, innovation and client-centricity. 

Your Profile

• University degree or equivalent qualification. 
• 10+ years of underwriting experience in Life & Health insurance and/or reinsurance, including deep expertise in Life and Disability underwriting. 
• Recognized industry expert with extensive knowledge of the German insurance market and an established professional network. 
• Proven leadership experience, including the successful development of high-performing teams. 
• Demonstrated ability to manage senior stakeholders and build trusted relationships at senior management level. 
• Strong track record in driving underwriting innovation, digital transformation and strategic change initiatives. 
• Strategic thinker with strong commercial acumen, executive presence and excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills. 
• Passion for leveraging digital technologies, data analytics and AI to shape the future of underwriting. 
• Excellent German and English language skills. 
• Willingness to travel.
